This is an abridged version of this book! Furthermore, some of the most memorable portions are missing! I see nothing in the description informing the purchaser of this rather important fact!
Horribly disappointed. Was very excited to read this book, but when it arrived nearly half the pages were blank on one side where the machine obviously didn't print. Now I am having to pay for shipping to return it and now wait another few weeks for it to ship again. From what I've read though, an excellent book. I would just highly advise getting it from a proper book store.
A great inside look at Appalachian life after the turn of the 20th century. Very entertaining and insightful. The author takes some license with his extrapolation when comparing the backgrounds, but it's a very eye opening view to a time past.
This book is very educational, and it is well written. Of particular interest is the author’s depiction of mountain life at the turn of the 20th century. It’s an excellent historical resource.
I have been wanting this book for a long time, I decided that to treat my self. This is a good read if you are interested in Appalachian culture. Kephart lived in the Smokey Mountain region for several years. This book gives insight into lives of the mountain people before the Great Smokey Mountain Park was established. It was very entertaining read.
Having lived in these beautiful mountains for nine years, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It helped me to both understand, and feel an affinity for, the people who had lived here for generations before I ever had the privilege of calling these mountains my home. Now, don't get me wrong. The Appalachian mountains are a struggle for any of us who do not (as was told to me too late) "bring their money with them". A truer sentiment, I have NEVER heard. This is a highly valuable read for anyone who lives in and loves the gentle beauty of the Southern Appalachians.
Though written a century ago, the author's wit and knowledge wrought from a classical education shine through, providing a rich and colorful window into the lives those who populated the Great Smoky Mountains at that time and before. He vividly describes the bear hunts he experienced with the remarkably hardy men, the lives of women and children, the historic source of the region's population, and more things of interest than I can describe here. All is not peaches and cream -- while there is much to admire in these folks, there also is a dark side well described by a person who lived among them and saw it all first hand, If you have an interest in the Appalachian area and its people, get this book. I doubt there is any other that will provide a look into their lives and culture more successfully.
