I read "The Lodger"' by Marie Belloc Lowndes and was so blown away that I had to find another of her books and came across this. I had no idea of the plot but I thought I would try it. The story starts in August 1914, when Britain declares war on Germany. It takes place in a small town with many German residents, of course this includes Anna. She was born in Germany, and she is not a legal English citizen, but has lived there for 20 years and has been a trusted employee the whole time, and is considered by all to be a good woman. She was first hired as a nurse for the daughter, Rose, and later became the maid after Rose grew up. She has raised Rose and loves her as though she were her own. This story explores the psychological changes of all the citizens within the next few months. A story that is just as relevant today. Ms Lowdes has a talent for writing a gripping page-turner with realistic, deep psychological insight. Her books teach us that technology may change, but human nature does not. Her stories could take place anytime, anywhere. The test of the truly great writers. I wonder why she is not better known.Product details

Good old Anna Marie Belloc Lowndes 9781171776628 Books Reviews
It was an interesting book, but not really very suspenseful. In fact, much more could have occurred at the end of the book, the ending wrapped things up rather quickly. There is some romance which is nice.
Holds your interest, with likeable characters, and a view of how people in England dealt with the first of the World Wars. I did not quite like the wrap-up, which is something that Marie Belloc Lowndes sometimes falls down in, I think. But perhaps I am more hopeful and she is more realistic than I. See what you think!
